Shootings and Stabbings in South Carolina Malls, Gas Stations, and Restaurants

Liability5

Over the past few days and weeks, multiple stabbings and shootings have occurred across South Carolina’s many gas stations, malls, and restaurants. Patrons of these establishments deserve to feel safe when they’re carrying out basic daily tasks like refueling or eating. If you have experienced harm at one of these establishments due to preventable assaults, you could potentially file a negligent security lawsuit in South Carolina.

Shooting at Parker’s Kitchen Leaves One Dead

Many people do not fully appreciate how dangerous late-night restaurants can be in South Carolina. Although some might associate establishments like bars or casinos with criminal activities, it is often 24/7 fast food that attracts the most violent offenders in the state.

In May of 2024, it was reported that a shooting had occurred at a Parker’s Kitchen location in Moncks Corner. One individual died from multiple gunshot wounds, while a second person survived after a single shot to the leg. While the suspect was quickly taken into custody, the local community is asking whether the restaurant could have done more to prevent the attack.

Two People Shot at Charleston Gas Station

Also in May of 2024, it was reported that two individuals had suffered gunshot wounds while at a gas station in Charleston. The incident occurred early in the morning, and there is some indication that both individuals shot each other due to some kind of altercation. It is not clear who was the aggressor, or whether one person acted in self-defense. Either way, this illustrates how dangerous it has become to simply fill up your gas in South Carolina. Fortunately, no bystanders were struck by stray bullets. One month prior, the body of a deceased woman was found in a garbage can outside a gas station in Columbia.

Columbiana Centre Mall Faces Multiple Lawsuits

On May 7th of 2024, multiple lawsuits against Columbiana Centre Mall were announced. All of these lawsuits stem from a mass shooting that occurred back in 2022. Injured plaintiffs now claim that the mall contributed to the shooting by creating an unsafe environment with negligent levels of security.

The shooting occurred when two rival groups encountered each other at the mall. Both groups fired upon each other, and dozens of people were injured by stray bullets. Some of these injured plaintiffs have already filed lawsuits against the mall, including two women who are currently suing the establishment for $20 million. One pregnant woman was struck in the leg, while there were also several reports of minors being shot.

These lawsuits have uncovered a long history of serious assaults, implying that the mall should have done more to prevent future incidents. According to one lawsuit, there are records of over 100 assaults at the mall during a five-year period. The owner of the mall has declined to comment.
