Semi-Trucks Keep Crashing in South Carolina

SemiTruck

Some might argue that semi-truck crashes in South Carolina are inevitable, but the sheer number of these crashes suggests that the commercial trucking industry should be doing more to protect innocent people. Three truck accidents within the past few weeks have led to numerous injuries and deaths. If you were injured in a truck accident like this, you are fully within your rights to consider a personal injury lawsuit.

Police Department Truck Runs Over Woman on the Beach

One of the most worrying South Carolina truck accidents in recent days involved a police vehicle rather than a commercial vehicle. Horry County Police confirmed that they have placed the officer driving the vehicle on administrative leave. This driver somehow ran over a woman lying on the beach near Springmaid Pier.

To make matters worse, the police vehicle inexplicably remained on top of the woman, forcing onlookers to rush to her aid. Eventually, these bystanders were able to lift the truck off the woman – but the damage had already been done. After being transported to a nearby hospital, the victim died of crush-related injuries. Numerous witnesses reported hearing the woman scream before the truck ran her over. It is not clear how this incident will play out, but the police department could easily be sued.

Car Gets Lodged Underneath Semi-Truck on I-85

Earlier in June, another victim was crushed by a heavy vehicle – albeit under very different circumstances. Police say that a smaller vehicle had become lodged underneath a Swift transportation truck on I-85, but they imparted few additional details. Perhaps most notably, authorities did not reveal whether the driver of the smaller vehicle had suffered injuries. These types of crashes often occur when truck drivers negligently switch lanes without first checking their blind spots.

Two Tractor-Trailers Collide on I-20

Also in June, two tractor-trailers collide on I-20 near Camden. The rear-end crash caused the death of one trucker, and police say that this individual was trying to slow down due to traffic. The impact also caused unspecified injuries for the other trucker. Police are investigating the incident, and criminal charges could be possible.

This incident highlights just how powerful and dangerous semi-trucks can be. Even when impacting another vehicle of similar size, a semi-truck can easily cause catastrophic injuries. If the front vehicle had been a smaller sedan, the vehicle would have been completely obliterated upon impact.
