Semi-Trucks Cause Havoc in South Carolina

TruckFront

The threat of semi-truck crashes in South Carolina is nothing new, but these vehicles seem to be causing accidents at a worrying rate. Within just the past few days and weeks, numerous crashes have caused injuries and deaths throughout the state. The public is asking questions about safety in the trucking industry, and the answers are not encouraging. If you have been harmed by a semi-truck accident in South Carolina, consider a consultation with an injury lawyer to review your options.

“Several People Injured” After Semi-Truck Crash on I-85

In February of 2025, it was reported that a major semi-truck crash had occurred on I-85 in Cherokee County. Later, police confirmed that there were actually two separate crashes that occurred “almost simultaneously” and close to one another. One of the incidents involved a semi-truck rear-ending another semi-truck. The driver of the front vehicle was badly injured – and he was airlifted to the nearest hospital.

First responders say that right as the helicopter was landing to take the trucker away, a second crash occurred nearby. This accident involved a box truck and four passenger vehicles, and a child was reportedly entrapped within one of these vehicles after the collision. The driver of the box truck was also hospitalized. This situation could have been much worse, as the box truck leaked fuel that might have ignited.

Head-On Semi-Truck Collision Causes Several Injuries

Days later, another major incident involving multiple commercial trucks occurred in Hart County. Police say that a pickup truck veered out of its lane at about 5:30 AM on the border between South Carolina and Georgia. The pickup then impacted a semi-truck, which also veered across the centerline and struck a second semi-truck. This second semi-truck then overturned. The drivers of all three vehicles were hospitalized after the collision, although first responders said their injuries were non-life-threatening.

Department of Transport Worker Killed by Semi-Truck Wheel

Also in February, a Department of Transport (DOT) worker was killed by a wheel that detached from a semi-truck in Dorchester County. The semi-truck was heading down US 15 when its tire came loose. This tire then struck the worker at high speed as he was working on the highway shoulder. Police say he was working as a surveyor at the time, and he suffered fatal injuries as a result of the impact. There was no word on why the wheel came loose, or whether the trucking company was properly maintaining its vehicles. The Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate.
