Another Individual Shot and Killed at Chevron Gas Station in the 4700 Block of Redan Road, Stone Mountain, Georgia.

Police say that an individual is dead after another shooting at a dangerous Stone Mountain gas station. Shots rang out at roughly 1:30AM EST at the Chevron gas station located at 4766 Redan Rd, Stone Mountain, GA. When police arrived, they found a man suffering from several gunshot wounds. The individual was rushed to the hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.

Few details have been released as DeKalb County Police work to identify suspects and figure out what led up to the shooting.

Unfortunately, this Chevron gas station has a troubling history of violence. Just over a year ago, on May 16, 2021, a man was killed and five others injured when more than 30 shots were fired into a crowd gathered at the gas station. Another man was killed on December 19, 2021.

Investigation and Questions

Because details are so limited, many important questions remain about this incident. As they pertain to a potential civil case and lawsuit, important questions and areas of investigation might include:

  • Did the victims and the shooter know each other or have a prior history?
  • Did the shooter have a significant criminal history?
  • Was the shooter a known person to the gas station?
  • What is the history of prior crime and police response at, and around, the Chevron gas station?
  • What security measures were in place at this Chevron Gas Station?
  • What security measures were put in place after prior shootings and murders at this same gas station?
  • What led up to the shooting?

These questions can help begin painting a clearer picture of why this incident occurred and whether it could have been prevented. Problematic properties such as this Chevron Gas Station have a legal duty to take reasonable steps to protect their customers. When these stores know they have a problem with crime and gang violence, they may be held liable when one of their customers is injured or killed in one of these instances of violent crime.

How to Prevent Violence and Crime at Apartment Complexes?

Legal contributor Attorney Danny Dalton, an experienced wrongful death lawyer, has represented many families of those killed or injured by the actions or negligence of others. Mr. Dalton offered the following commentary on this situation:

“Owners and operators of businesses can and should take reasonable steps to help prevent violence on their properties – for example, adequate lighting, video cameras, fences, courtesy officers, security patrols, off-duty officers, trespass lists, and maintaining a clean store in good repair can all help to deter crime. It is also important for property owners to request and monitor crime data to get a better idea of what is happening at and around the property so that they can evaluate what security measures are necessary. Owners and operators should request for the 9-1-1 calls for service logs, crime grids, and actual police reports. You can’t prevent all crime, but property owners can certainly take steps to discourage it from occurring on the property.”
