Inadequate Security? Father of Five, Dean Phillips, Shot Dead in Parking Lot of Manuel’s Tavern in Atlanta, Georgia
Around 11 PM, Dean Phillips was walking to his car in the parking lot of Manuel’s Tavern when he noticed a man breaking into cars. Phillips told other patrons on the patio to call the cops and went to confront the man. Phillips was shot in the chest and died from his injuries. The gunman escaped in the vehicle of an accomplice and has not been identified.
Senseless gun violence continues to rise in Georgia. Nightclubs and Shopping Centers are hot spots for violence, and because bullets have no names, innocent bystanders are injured or killed.
What Can Businesses Do to Combat the Violence?
Legal contributor Attorney Brian Mickelsen, an experienced wrongful death lawyer, has represented many families of those killed or injured by the actions or negligence of others. Mr. Mickelsen offered the following commentary on Georgia’s growing violence:
“Businesses play an important part in addressing Georgia’s gun violence problem. Far too often, business owners allow crime, loitering, vandalism, and drug activity to happen on their property without addressing it. What appears to be a non-violent crime, in a matter of seconds, can turn deadly. This is precisely why businesses should maintain open lines of communication with local law enforcement. Request the crime stats. Stay informed about what happens on your property. Trespass loiters and dangerous persons. Maintain adequate lighting. Clean up the graffiti. Install cameras that work. And hire a security guard where necessary.”
