More Shootings Reported in South Carolina Businesses
Shootings continue unabated in South Carolina. With each passing week, gunfire erupts across commercial businesses – including bars, clubs, convenience stores, gas stations, restaurants, hotels, and many other establishments. With so many bullets discharged each week, injuries and deaths are inevitable. Often, bystanders pay the price of negligent security in South Carolina. What can you do if one of these shootings harmed you or someone you love?
Teen Shot Twice at South Carolina Gas Station
In September of 2024, it was reported that a teenager had been shot twice during a shooting at a gas station in Georgetown County. The assailant was standing across the street when he fired the bullets – implying that this was a somewhat long-range attack. It is not clear whether the teen was the intended target, or whether they were killed in the crossfire. Whatever the case may be, she was dead before first responders arrived.
Teen Waffle House Employee Shot in North Carolina
In nearby North Carolina, another teen died from gunshot wounds while working at a Waffle House in Laurinburg. The assailant reportedly became agitated while waiting for his food, hurling abuse at the workers until he received his order. While walking to his car, he turned and fired two shots at the Waffle House. One or both of these rounds shot a teen worker, causing fatal wounds.
Suspect Turns Himself In After McDonald’s Shooting
Also in September, a suspect turned himself in, admitting his role in a Rock Hill shooting. The incident occurred at McDonald’s, and it also left an 18-year-old with gunshot wounds. This teen initially survived and was placed on life support, but he ultimately passed away. Although the authorities took one person into custody, it is believed that this second individual was the shooter.
When Can I Sue for Negligent Security?
You may be able to sue for negligent security if you were harmed by a preventable or foreseeable act of violence. To determine whether you can sue, your lawyer might need to look into the history of the establishment. They may determine whether past incidents have occurred in the past, and whether the business owner should have taken more concrete steps to prevent further violence. Certain types of businesses require more security than others. These include bars, nightclubs, casinos, and establishments in notoriously violent neighborhoods.
