Motorcyclist Dies After Being “Thrown into Guardrail” on S.C 11

Motorcyclist3

All too often, we hear stories of vehicles cutting off motorcyclists while turning – causing catastrophic injuries for riders. In many cases, these accidents occur due to a common but extremely hazardous traffic infraction: The failure to shoulder check. Whenever a motorist turns, they should check for following motorcyclists. As a recent motorcyclist crash in South Carolina highlights, the consequences can be fatal if drivers fail to take this simple step.

SUV Driver Turned Into Passing Motorcyclist

In June of 2024, the South Carolina Highway Patrol confirmed that a motorcyclist had lost his life after colliding with an SUV in Pickens County. The accident occurred when the Ford SUV slowed and turned left into a private driveway. During this maneuver, a motorcyclist attempted to pass from behind. The SUV then turned into the oath of the motorcyclist and threw the rider into the air.

It was at this point that the rider struck a guardrail and suffered what authorities described as “multiple traumatic injuries.” He was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders. The Highway Patrol continues to investigate this incident, although there were no arrests made.

Many Vehicles Fail to Check Their Surroundings Before Turning

The circumstances of this crash are not clear. However, it is safe to say that many drivers fail to check their surroundings before turning – and this can cause serious hazards for following motorcyclists. If a driver fails to check their mirrors, they might easily miss a motorcyclist. If they subsequently attempt a turn, they could turn into the path of the motorcyclist and cause fatal injuries.

Sometimes, motorcyclists fall into blind spots – and shoulder-checking is the only way to overcome this visibility limitation. Unfortunately, many drivers do not bother and simply rely on their mirrors.

Failure to Indicate Is Another Common Traffic Infraction

The failure to signal or “indicate” is another common traffic infraction that can put motorcyclists in serious danger. Although signaling before turning is one of the most basic driving skills, many seem to forget that their vehicles are equipped with indicators or “blinkers.” Without these flashing lights, it is impossible for motorcyclists to predict how a vehicle will turn.

If a driver fails to signal, the implication is that they intend to keep moving straight. However, the driver may simply be too lazy to indicate – assuming that there is no one else on the road. A subsequent turn may seem completely unexpected – and a passing rider might suddenly find themselves flying through the air.
