Stabbed at a Bar in South Carolina: Can I Sue?

BarFight

While shootings often steal the headlines in South Carolina, stabbings are just as problematic. In the hands of a determined criminal, a knife can be just as deadly as a firearm. Stabbings may also be more traumatic and painful than shootings due to the close proximity of the attacker and the nature of the wounds. Although stabbings can occur anywhere, bars are common locations for these attacks. Can you sue after being stabbed at a bar in South Carolina?

Man Arrested After Stabbing Victim Outside South Carolina Bar

In October of 2024, various sources reported on a stabbing that had occurred at a bar in Chapin. Local police say that the defendant stabbed the victim in the parking lot of the Tipsy Toad Tavern at about 2:00 AM. The victim was apparently stabbed in the back while numerous people watched, prompting one bystander to intervene. This second individual was also cut by the defendant as he tried to save the victim from a life-threatening situation.

The defendant then left in a vehicle, but was eventually apprehended by police. He is now facing charges of attempted murder, assault and battery, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Fortunately, both of the people who were attacked survived with what police called “non-life-threatening injuries.” However, this does not necessarily mean they avoided permanent disabilities or disfigurements.

Stabbings are fairly common in South Carolina. At almost exactly the same time, another report highlighted a “knife attack” in Spartanburg County. This attack occurred on the side of a residential road, and it involved numerous people. As a result, local police arrived in full force. Assisted by police helicopters, deputies on the ground broke up the fight. At least one person was injured in the stabbing incident.

When Can You Sue for a Bar Stabbing?

You can sue for a bar stabbing if you believe that the establishment should have provided better security. In the incident at the Tipsy Toad Tavern, one might argue that security staff at the bar should have played a greater role. The fact that a bystander had to intervene to protect the victim from being stabbed in the back could imply that security staff were totally absent.

A negligent security lawyer can help you pursue this type of legal action. These legal professionals may help you investigate the incident in greater detail, perhaps exposing past similar incidents that occurred at the same bar.

Can a Negligent Security Lawyer in South Carolina Help After a Stabbing?

If you were stabbed at a bar, pub, club, or restaurant, a Charleston personal injury lawyer may be able to help you pursue the compensation you need. By filing a lawsuit against the property owner or business for failing to create a safe security plan, you can cover your medical expenses, missed wages, emotional distress, and other damages.
