When Are South Carolina Gas Stations Responsible for Shootings?
Numerous gas station shootings have occurred within South Carolina over the past few months, causing concern across the State. Many people have suffered injuries, while others are struggling with psychological trauma. If you were one of the victims, you might be wondering whether you can take legal action. Should the gas station be liable for your injuries? Could they have done more to prevent the crime?
South Carolina Is Struggling With Numerous Gas Station Robberies
On February 24th of 2024, it was reported that a teenager had been arrested in South Carolina in connection with a string of gas station robberies. The teen had apparently targeted at least three gas stations, and he now faces numerous counts of robbery, kidnapping, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. He will reportedly be tried as an adult. It is unclear why the teen is facing three counts of kidnapping, but this could be due to the potential hostage-taking. Police did reveal that he presented a firearm at all three gas stations.
On February 22nd of 2024, it was reported that a man had been arrested in Spartanburg after attempting to rob a gas station with a firearm. The individual in question apparently discharged his firearm, as witnesses called police after hearing shots ring out. The police later confirmed that the defendant had entered the gas station before producing a firearm and discharging it inside the structure. The individual then attempted to gain access to the cash register, failed, and fled the scene. He subsequently dropped his pistol near the gas pumps before being arrested. He was sentenced to ten years in prison.
In North Carolina, another defendant was arrested for shooting at two people in a gas station. This individual was allegedly playing a slot machine at a Quick Mart when he noticed the two victims enter. For unknown reasons, he immediately began firing at these individuals – causing them to flee the gas station. At least one was hospitalized after being struck by bullets.
These incidents highlight just how common gas station shootings have become in this area. With so many shootings, gas stations now have a clear legal responsibility to improve their security systems. If they fail to take these steps despite such obvious criminal activity at gas stations across the State, they may be held liable for any resulting injuries.
